Trans? No, just often mistaken as such. Breast cancer survivor? Well, that’s the plan, the survival bit, but without the cancer or the breasts. NOT QUITE THAT is an intimate and insightful exploration of how we are seen, how we see ourselves, and why it matters.

MEET THE DIRECTOR

 

Ali Grant is a lesbian filmmaker, based in Vancouver, BC. At age 53 she went back to school to learn documentary filmmaking. She is passionate about telling stories about the extraordinary lives of ordinary women. Her docs have shown in festivals nationally and internationally, including the Uppsala Short Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival, Toronto’s Inside Out LGBT Film Festival, DOXA, mujerDOC, and the Women Over Fifty Film Festival. She has received funding from Rogers, Creative BC, and TELUS originals, has awards from the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council, a Ph.D. in geography from McMaster University (1997), and a Certificate in Documentary Film Production from Langara College (2019). Ali is a member of the International Documentary Association, the Documentary Organization of Canada, and the Gender Equity in Media Society Vancouver. She is the founder of On the Creek Films.
