MOTHER VALLEY

FRANCE / LEBANON | 86 mins | [PG]

Lebanon, 1958. A civil war rages. A young mother and model wife, Layla, spends the summer with her family in a remote village in the Christian mountains. It’s wedding season but her two younger sisters, Eva and Nada, have no desire to follow in Layla’s footsteps by accepting an arranged marriage organized by their father, a broke feudal aristocrat. This summer, an encounter with a French guy and his mother opens Layla’s eyes on her condition as a woman living in a patriarchal society, where female fates are decided by men – fathers, husbands, and even sons. For the first time ever, Layla suddenly stifles.

MEET THE DIRECTOR

Born in Lebanon, Carlos Chahine left his homeland in 1975 because of the war. His dream of becoming a psychiatrist did not survive the trials of the medical school entrance exam, where that year only dentistry slots remained. He resigned himself to studying dentistry, a profession he would never practice. During his university years, he discovered theater with Véra Gregh, who encouraged him to become an actor. Once his studies were completed, he joined the National Theatre School of Strasbourg. Since then, he has worked under the direction of many directors, including Michel Vinaver, Matthias Langhoff, Sylviu Purcărete, Alain Françon, Ghassan Salhab, Ziad Doueiri, and others. It is through cinema that he reconnected with his homeland. Starting in 2008, he created what he calls his family trilogy, three films directly inspired by his Lebanese past: The Northern Road, Chekhov in Beirut, and The Gambler’s Son. MOTHER VALLEY is his first feature film.
