Sub-Saharan Africa: an open window

The curated programme Sub-Saharan Africa: an open window presented in partnership with TidPix, will give digital festival goers the chance to discover up-and-coming talents and pioneers from South Africa, Sénégal, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria including co-productions from Germany and Austria. The programme will be completed by a discussion between talents and professionals of the industry facilitated by the curator on the new film streaming distribution models and the opportunities and new challenges for African cinema.

One of the films from the African strand, Poppie Nongena comes from Ramsgate International Film & TV Festival alumni, Christiaan Olwagen, who screened The Seagull in 2018. The multi-award winner of the South African Film & TV Awards, the Golden Horn, Poppi Nongena tells the story of a South African woman, an Afrikaans speaking Xhosa mother, whose life revolves around her family and finding stability in a period of insufferable upheaval in the country.
